Phemeranthusteretifolius (Pursh) Rafinesque. Appalachian Rock-pink. Phen: Jun-Sep. Hab: In shallow soil over felsic or mafic rocks (granite, gneiss, schist, granite, diabase, greenstone, metabasalt, sandstone, Altamaha grit), especially where periodically wet by seepage (often in mats of the moss Grimmia). Dist: DE (at least formerly), se. PA, and WV, south to se. TN, GA (where it extends into the Coastal Plain on outcrops of Altamaha Grit), and AL, in the Appalachians and adjacent provinces.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments:P. teretifolius is an allotetraploid, probably derived from hybridization of the diploids P. mengesii and P. parviflorus followed by polyploidization.

Intro:Delicate, ascending to upright perennial.
Stems:Stems fleshy and close to ground, reddish, smooth.
Leaves:Leaves alternate, sessile, crowded, linear and round in cross-section, 1-2 1/2 in. long, fleshy, smooth.
Inforescence:
Flowers:Flowers few in an open, 2-4 times forked, terminal cluster on a slender stalk above the leaves; dark pink; about 1/2 in. wide; consisting of 5 oval petals and 15-20 stamens (sepals drop early); each flower opens in the afternoon for 1 day.
Fruits:Fruit an oval to elliptic capsule.
