Intro: Erect biennial of cove and other mesic, nutrient-rich forests.
Stems: Stems branched in inflorescence, smooth.
Leaves: Leaves basal and alternate on the stem, long-petioled (sessile above) and palmately divided into 3 leaflets, each widely elliptic to oblong-oval, 2½ in. or more long, sharply toothed and smooth.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in open compound umbels at ends of branches, the umbellets consisting of 3 sessile, perfect flowers and 3-5 male (staminate) flowers on short stalks. Flowers white, tiny, consisting of 5 petals, 5 sepals that are longer than the petals and a bristly ovary.
Fruits: Fruit an oval to oblong, burlike cluster of 2 bristly seeds.
