*Cheilanthes Swartz.
Circumscribed here more narrowly than traditionally, and excluding all North American native species, a genus of perhaps 100 species (ultimately fewer once additionally subdivided), perennial herbs, of the Old World and New World. Cheilanthes viridis (as treated here) is not closely related to any of the genera in which it has been placed (including Cheilanthes) and will ultimately be placed in a new genus.
ID notes:With most of the species formerly placed in Cheilanthes moved to Myriopteris and other genera, the only remaining (non-native) species of Cheilanthes in our region is a bright-green, mostly 2-pinnate fern of mainly moist sites. The brown marginal sporangia contrast strikingly with the green blade.
