Crataegus iracunda Beadle var. populnea (Ashe) Kruschke. Poplar Hawthorn. Hab: Mesic to subxeric woodlands, brush, pastures. Dist: NY w. to WI, s. to NC (n. SC?), TN, OH.

ID notes: This variety differs from the typical variety in its larger (4-7 cm), glabrous, broadly ovate to deltate leaf blades, larger flowers (15-18 mm in diameter) and more northerly distribution.
