Oenothera hybrida Michaux. Common name: Blue Ridge Sundrops. Phenology: May-Aug. Habitat: Moist forests and woodlands, rocky streambanks, moist roadsides, at moderate to high elevations. Distribution: Southern Blue Ridge Mountains of VA south through NC and TN to GA.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: The earliest name for this southern Blue Ridge entity appears to be O. hybrida Michaux, although perhaps based on unusually pubescent material. Its relationship to var. fraseri, var. hybrida and var. latifolia of later authors is unclear. Relatively broad-leaved forms (f. latifolia) of O. tetragona in the sedimentary Appalachians of PA, VA, and WV somewhat resemble Blue Ridge plants, but appear to only represent environmental variation; further taxonomic study is needed to determine the validity and distributional limits of O. hybrida.
