Crataegus pexa Beadle. Woolly Dwarf Hawthorn. Phen: Late Mar-Apr; Sep-Oct. Hab: Longleaf pine sandhills, other xeric or subxeric forests, pine and oak scrublands, and disturbed woodlands. Dist: Sc. NC south to n. FL, west to s. and c. AL; one population in Southampton County, VA (Lance 2014). This taxon is locally common in Cumberland County, NC.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: Similar to C. munda Beadle but differing by longer thorns (3-5 cm) and a taller habit (1-3 m). C. cuthbertii Ashe may represent an intermediate between C. pexa and C. ravenelii Sargent.
