Crataegus ×vailiae Britton. Vail’s Hawthorn. Phen: Apr-May; Sep-Oct. Hab: Pastures, woodlands, streambanks. Dist: VA and NC w. to MO, AR.

ID notes:The serrated, unlobed, pubescent leaves with few or no petiolar glands, deeply serrate sepals and partly pitted pyrenes are usually diagnostic.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: A sporadic but widespread, assumed interserial hybrid of C. uniflora and C. calpodendron, possibly apomictic. Different local parental genotypes may produce variation in leaf morphology of ×vailiae, and cause confusion with other, unrelated species.

Synonymy: = FNA9, Tn, Lance (2014); = Crataegus calpodendron × uniflora; = n/a – RAB
