Pentalinon luteum (Linnaeus) B.F. Hansen & Wunderlin. Wild Allamanda, Hammock Viper's-tail. Phen: Mar-Jun. Hab: Mangrove swamps, tropical hammocks. Dist: S. FL; West Indies; Honduras; Colombia.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: Small (1933) and Ward (2001) recognized two taxonomic entities in FL at specific and varietal rank, respectively (see synonymy). Woodson (1936) treated Pentalinon luteum (as Urechites lutea) very broadly, calling it "an extremely variable species" and "very unstable", and warning that "although segregation may appear an attractive solution of the vexatious variability, a wide selection of specimens, such as that which has been available for these studies, should prove an effective deterrent." Nonetheless, entities worthy of taxonomic recognition may be present.
