Pogonia ophioglossoides (Linnaeus) Ker Gawler. Common name: Rose Pogonia, Snakemouth, Beardflower, Ettercap, Addermouth. Phenology: Mar-Jun; May-Sep. Habitat: Savannas, bogs, especially in open peaty or gravelly situations with seepage. Distribution: NL (Newfoundland) and MB south to s. FL and e. TX.

Intro: Erect perennial found in savannas and bogs, especially in open peaty or gravelly situations.

Stems: Stem unbranched, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves usually 1 about halfway up stem (may be 1-2 stalked leaves at base), sessile-clasping, lance-shaped, ascending, 1 1/2-4 in. long, fleshy, smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers 1-2 at top of stem above an erect, elliptic-oval leafy bract; pink (rarely white); 1-2 in. wide and about 3/4 in. long; bilaterally symmetric, with an erect sepal at the top, 2 petals (sometimes with darker pink veins) forming a hood above, 2 spreading lateral sepals and an unlobed but fringed lip-petal at bottom bearing a showy crest of fleshy, yellow bristles.

Fruits: Fruit an ellipsoid capsule.
