Croton humilis Linnaeus. Pepperbush, Low Croton, Salvia. Phen: Jan-Dec. Hab: Rockland hammocks, disturbed uplands. Dist: S. FL (Miami-Dade County, Collier County, and mainland and keys of Monroe County); West Indies.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Plants usually referred to C. humilis also occur in s. TX, e. Mexico, and se. Mexico. Levin in FNA (2016) notes that "Texas plants have more stamens (30-35) than Florida plants (15-20)". The Texas and Mexican population is provisionally excluded here from C. humilis s.s. and placed in C. berlandieri Torrey. {not yet keyed}
