Crataegus scabrida Sargent var. asperifolia (Sargent) Kruschke. Rough Hawthorn. Phen: May; Sep-Oct. Hab: Mesic hardwood forests, streamside thickets. Dist: A northern species predominantly of eastern Canada and the Great Lakes Region, east to NH; the var. asperifolia (Sargent) Kruschke is reported as disjunct for VA by Phipps (FNA9).

ID notes:Somewhat distinctive in its trullate, scabrate leaves, villous inflorescences and pitted pyrenes.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: The taxonomic disposition and status of this species in its southern range limits is poorly known.
