Carex purpurifera Mackenzie. Section: [26bb] Section 19 Laxiflorae. Limestone Purple Sedge. Phen: May-Jun. Hab: Moist, rich cove forests, at low elevations, over calcareous or mafic rocks. Dist: WV (Vanderhorst et al. 2019), w. VA and KY south to n. GA and n. AL, mostly west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, but with scattered disjunct populations on calcareous or mafic sites in the Blue Ridge.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: See Bryson (1985) for discussion. Naczi (1999b) reports a chromosome number of n = 17-19.
