ID notes:Often sympatric with Crataegus macrosperma Ashe, differing in the rhombic-elliptic leaf shape and more arborescent habit (3-8 m).

Taxonomy Comments: A tetraploid apomict, presumed of hybrid origin between C. macrosperma and C. succulenta or C. punctata, the latter two species no longer known from the Great Balsam Mountains. See Lance (2013, 2014) for detailed information.
