Geum rivale Linnaeus. Water Avens, Purple Avens. Phen: May-Jun. Hab: Calcareous fens, swamps, seepages, and wet meadows. Dist: Circumboreal, in North America from NL (Labrador), Keewatin, and BC south to NJ, MD, WV (Pocahontas, Preston, Randolph, and Tucker counties), OH, IN, IL, MN, SD, NM, and WA.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: In our region, the closest relative to Geum rivale is the narrow Southern Appalachian G. geniculatum.
