ID notes:Fusiak & Schilling (1984) studied Prenanthes roanensis and related species. Additional characters (other than those explicitly used in the key above) useful in separating Nabalus roanensis (in the broad sense, including N. cylindricus) from Nabalus altissimus are: phyllary tips usually black (vs. usually green), flowers 5-8 per head (vs. 4-6), and inflorescence usually narrow and thyrsoid (vs. usually conspicuously branched).
