Hab: Dry to mesic forests and woodlands, bottomland and riparian forests, bluffs, hardwood flatwoods, pine flatwoods, prairies, old fields, fencerows, pastures, roadsides; uncommon in wetlands. Dist: NJ, c. PA, OH, IN, MO, and KS, south to c. peninsular FL and TX, and also in e. and s. Mexico.
ID notes: A distinctive Smilax with pale (glaucous) lower leaf surface.
