*Alkekengi officinarum Moench. Chinese-lantern Plant, Winter-cherry. Phen: Jun-Aug. Hab: Disturbed suburban areas, persistent or very slightly naturalizing from horticultural use. Dist: Native of Japan, Korea, and n. China. Commonly cultivated as an ornamental and occasionally naturalized in e. North America, as at scattered locations in TN (Chester, Wofford, & Kral 1997).

Origin/Endemic status: E. and se. Asia

Other Comments: It is perennial, readily recognized by its mature calyces red-orange and up to 5.5 cm long.
