Distribution: The species is circumboreal; ssp. littoralis is North American: NL (Labrador) west to BC, south to NY (Long Island), NJ, PA, w. VA, OH, IN, MO, and KS.

ID notes: Of our members of section Genuini (species with a lateral inflorescence), Juncus balticus ssp. littoralis can be distinguished by its acute capsules, stout creeping rhizome, dark perianth, and upwardly sweeping inflorescence branches.
