Carex lasiocarpa Ehrhart var. americana Fernald. Common name: Slender Sedge. Phenology: Jun. Habitat: In shallow water of alkaline spring seep, on hummock in acidic basin marsh, and in high elevation fen over amphibolite. Distribution: A circumboreal species; var. lasiocarpa is Eurasian, var. americana ranges from NL west to AK, south to NJ, WV, MD (C. Frye, pers. comm. 2000), VA, nw. NC, MO, IA, CO, UT, and n. CA. Reported for the Ozark portion of MO (J. Thomas, pers. comm., 2020). First reported for VA by Wieboldt et al. (1998). Found for the first time in NC in the valley of Long Hope Creek (Ashe County, NC), in Jul 1999 by A.S. Weakley and P.D. McMillan.
