Cyperus distinctus Steudel. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Marshes, wet pine flatwoods, wet hammocks, ditches. Distribution: E. SC south to Panhandle FL and s. FL; se. LA; Bahamas (New Providence Cay).
ID notes: The spongy-based achenes are unique among our sect. Luzuloidei species. At a glance C. distinctus inflorescences are intermediate between C. virens and C. pseudovegetus – heads at maturity are looser than C. pseudovegetus, but with shorter, more lanceoloid spikelets than C. virens. C. virens also has triquetrous culms (vs. rounded-trigonous in C. distinctus).
