Rhynchospora cephalantha A. Gray var. attenuata Gale. Common name: Small Bunched Beaksedge. Phenology: Jul-Oct. Habitat: Pine savannas, sandhill seeps, openings in streamhead pocosins, blackwater streamheads and their ecotones, often under a tree/shrub canopy. Distribution: E. MD and se. VA south to s. GA and s. AL, west to w. LA.

ID notes: The heads of R. cephalantha var. attenuata are hemispheric, not globular as in other varieties of R. cephalantha. Spikelets are brown to dark brown. Stems usually lean at an angle, not vertical as in R. chalarocephala, which also differs in its very dark brown spikelets.
