Agrostis mertensii Trinius. Common name: Arctic Bentgrass. Phenology: Jul-Aug. Habitat: In thin soil of high elevation rocky summits; also in riverside flood scour areas at much lower elevations. Distribution: In North America south to ME (Mt. Katahdin), NH (White Mountains), VT, NY (Adirondack Mountains), WV (Spruce Knob), TN (Roan Mountain, Abrams Creek), NC (Roan Mountain, Big Yellow Mountain, Black Mountains), QC, BC, CO, UT (?), and AK; n. Europe.
