Caulophyllum giganteum (Farwell) Loconte & W.H. Blackwell. Northern Blue Cohosh. Phen: Apr-May; Jul-Aug. Hab: Rich moist forests. Dist: C. giganteum is more northern in distribution than C. thalictroides, ranging from QC and ON south to w. NC, e. TN, c. KY, n. OH, and MI.

Taxonomy Comments: This species blooms about two weeks earlier than C. thalictroides where they grow together. The combination of sympatry, morphologic distinctness, and phenologic separation of the two taxa argues for recognition at the species level.
