Hexastylis species 1. Common name: Buck Creek Heartleaf. Phenology: May. Habitat: Serpentine barrens. Distribution: Endemic to the Buck Creek Serpentine Barren, Clay County, NC.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: At the Buck Creek Serpentine Barren (Clay County, NC) a plant resembling Hexastylis ruthii carpets several hundred hectares, in association with Packera serpenticola, Thalictrum macrostylum, Sporobolus heterolepis, and Symphyotrichum rhiannon; various morphological differences of this population, especially the rhizomatous habit and the prominent style extensions, suggest that it may represent an additional undescribed taxon.
