Vitis rupestris Scheele. Sand Grape, Sugar Grape. Phen: Apr-Jun; Aug-Sep. Hab: Along streams and in riverbank scour areas and gravel bars, sometimes on rocky limestone slopes, especially in calcareous regions. Dist: MD, WV, sw. PA west to MO, south to VA, c. TN, and n. AR.
ID notes: Recognizable by its sprawling habit (stems usually < 2 m long) and leaves that are wider than long and folded along the midvein. Ciliate leaf margins are also a good character to separate it from V. riparia, which has smooth leaf margins.
