*Mucuna pruriens (Linnaeus) A.P. de Candolle. Common name: Velvetbean, Bengal Bean, Florida Bean. Phenology: Feb-Jun. Habitat: Disturbed areas, fields, cultivated and sporadically established in disturbed areas. Distribution: Native of se. Asia.
Origin/Endemic status: E. and se. Asia
Other Comments: The orange hairs present on the seed pods of this species produce the protein mucanain, which causes severe itching to human skin upon contact.
