Crataegus triflora Chapman. Common name: Threeflower Hawthorn. Phenology: Apr-May; Sep-Oct. Habitat: Wooded ravines, mesic slopes, limestone outcrops, flatwoods, prairies. Distribution: Nw. GA to n. MS, s. to s. AL, MS; disjunct populations in prairie sites of Houston Co, GA, c. LA, s. AR (possibly in se. TN?).
ID notes: Usually a multi-stemmed shrub 1-3 m tall, rarely to 6 m. Crataegus triflora produces some of the largest flowers in the genus (to 3 cm diameter), though frequently only 3 flowers are borne per inflorescence; occasional vigorous plants may bear 4-6 flowers per inflorescence.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: Typically this taxon exhibits 30 or more stamens per flower, but more evaluation of the species is needed. Ten-stamened forms in GA and 20-stamened forms in MS may merit additional taxonomic recognition. The related Crataegus austromontana Beadle may be one local genotype or hybrid having 10 stamens that has been fully described.
