Hypericum canadense Linnaeus. Section: Brathys. Common name: Canada St. John's-wort. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Bogs, pine savannas, ditches. Distribution: NL (Newfoundland) and QC west to MN, south to s. GA, ne. FL, Panhandle FL, and MS; also in Holland and Ireland, where considered by some (but not us) to be native.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Hybrids with H. mutilum and/or H. boreale have been called H. ×dissimulatum E.P. Bicknell (pro sp.).

Stems: Stems slender, with ascending branches, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, sessile, linear or narrowly lance-shaped, to 1 1/2 in. long, with 1-3 parallel veins on upper surface, smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in somewhat open, forked terminal cluster with linear bracts at the base; yellow; to 1/4 in. wide; consisting of 5 spreading, oblong-lance-shaped petals, 5 linear to lance-shaped sepals at least as long as the petals and showing between them, and an erect bushy cluster of stamens and a pistil at the center.

Fruits: Fruit an erect, reddish, oval-conical capsule with persistent style.
