Hypericum mitchellianum Rydberg. Blue Ridge St. John’s-wort. Phen: Jul-Aug. Hab: Grassy balds, grassy openings, forests, seepages, at moderate to high elevations (generally at 1000-1900 m or more). Dist: W. VA, e. WV, and e. TN south to sw. NC, a Southern Appalachian endemic.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: Robson (2006) interprets this as a hybrid of H. graveolens and H. punctatum but offers no evidence other than its general morphological intermediacy. It also has a wider distribution than one of its alleged parents, H. graveolens, and thus is acting as an independent evolutionary entity, regardless.
