Hibiscus grandiflorus Michaux. Common name: Large-flowered Hibiscus, Swamp Hibiscus. Phenology: (May-) Jun-Aug (-Sep). Habitat: Tidal marsh, swamps, lakeshores, wet pine flatwoods and savanna. Distribution: E. GA (Chatham Co., adjacent to the SC border) (Jones & Coile 1988) and historically apparently in se. SC (Mellichamp 1889) south to s. FL, west to e. LA; w. Cuba.

plant sale text: Swamp Rose-mallow bears 8-inch pale pink flowers, singly or in branched clusters, in the late summer. Its velvety, grayish leaves are also handsome. This southeastern native perennial can be found growing in coastal marshes. Its seed capsules are attractive and can add winter interest. It thrives in wet areas, or in average soil if it has adequate water and is well-mulched. This plant typically reaches a height of 6 to 8 feet when mature. Swamp Rose-mallow is an excellent plant for attracting butterflies.
