not marked as a favorite taxon Hudsonia tomentosa Nuttall. Common name: Woolly Beach-Heather. Phenology: May-Jul; Aug-Sep. Habitat: Dunes, sand flats, blowouts (in DE, NC, VA), high elevation quartzitic sandstone outcrops (in WV). Distribution: Newfoundland and Labrador (Labrador) west to Manitoba and Northwest Territories, south to West Virginia (Panther Knob), Wisconsin, and Minnesota, and south along the Atlantic Coast from Maine to Virginia and ne. North Carolina (where it reaches its southern limit in Dare County).

Horticultural Information

Intro: Low, evergreen, shrubby perennial forming dense, spreading mats on dunes, sand flats and blowouts (DE, NC, VA), and in high-elevation quartzitic sandstone outcrops (WV).

Stems: Stems somewhat woody, usually much-branched from below, grayish downy.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, crowded and pressed against the stem, scalelike to needle-shaped, 1/8 in. long, grayish, densely wooly.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers sessile (or on tiny stalks) and densely packed, along with leafy bracts, on the branches; bright yellow; 1/4-3/8 in. wide; with 5 oval petals and many (9-18) stamens surrounding a single pistil in the center.

Fruits: Fruit a tiny, oval capsule.
