Hab: Grasslands, shrublands, thornscrub on gravelly clays or loams over the Catahoula and Frio formations (Carr 2016). Dist: S. TX (Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Starr and Zapata counties); Mexico (NLE and TAM).
ID notes: Lophophora williamsii has very soft, uniformly pale blue-green stems, quite unlike the hard, speckled, and almost shiny, green stem surface of Astrophytum asterias.
