Astrophytum asterias (Zuccarini) Lemaire. Star-peyote, Star Cactus, Sea-Urchin Cactus. Phen: Mar-May (-Oct). Hab: Grasslands, shrublands, thornscrub on gravelly clays or loams over the Catahoula and Frio formations (Carr 2016). Dist: S. TX (Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Starr and Zapata counties); Mexico (NLE and TAM).

ID notes:Lophophora williamsii has very soft, uniformly pale blue-green stems, quite unlike the hard, speckled, and almost shiny, green stem surface of Astrophytum asterias.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Synonymy: = FNA4, K3, K4, Mex; = Echinocactus asterias Zucc. – Tx, Weniger (1984)
