Hab: In crevices of rock outcrops, or in dry talus slopes, over a variety of rock types (including limestone, dolostone, schist, gneiss, shale). Dist: W. MD and e. WV south through w. VA and nc. KY south to w. NC, e. and c. TN, and n. AL. The AL occurrence (Marshall County) is reported by Dattilo & Keener (2017).
