Intro: Erect annual of fields and other disturbed areas. Native of Europe.
Stems: Stems few-branched near the base and often branched in upper portions, coarsely stiff-hairy below and with sticky glandular hairs above.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, sessile, 2-6 in. long; basal leaves spatula-shaped, stem leaves lance-shaped.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in loose, branching terminal clusters; white or pinkish; 3/4-1 in. wide; consisting of 5 deeply 2-lobed petals bearing a ruffled appendage at the base (creating a ruffled circle at the mouth of the corolla throat), and a glandular-hairy, inflated, cylindric calyx tube bearing 10 prominent green ribs that branch and rejoin, the tube splitting into 5 narrow lobes at the top.
Fruits: Fruit an oval capsule.
Comments: Flowers open at night.
