Intro: Erect or ascending, bushy annual of disturbed areas and agricultural fields.
Stems: Stems branching, whitish-green, smooth.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate, oval to spoon-shaped, 1-3 in. long, with prominent veins and bumpy surface.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers inconspicuous in sessile clusters tucked into leaf axils, greenish, lacking petals, consisting of 3 sepals and surrounded by 3 lance-shaped bracts about 1/8" long, each with a stiff, elongated tip; flowers are male (3 stamens) or female (ovary with 3 styles).
Fruits: Fruit a black seed surrounded by a wrinkled membrane.
