Horticultural Information

Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial of bogs, wet meadows and swamp forests.

Stems: Stems simple or loosely branched, very leafy, smooth; cone-shaped, red bulblets develop in leaf axils late in the season.

Leaves: Leaves opposite to sub-opposite (rarely alternate), petioled to sessile, elliptic to lance-shaped and tapered at both ends, 1 1/2-4 in. long, with slightly down-rolled margins, minutely black-dotted and smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in erect, crowded, terminal raceme 4-12 in. long, each flower borne on an ascending stalk; yellow; 1/2-3/4 in. wide; consisting of 5 elliptic-oblong petals streaked/dotted with black and bearing a pair of red patches at the base, 5 oval to lance-shaped sepals, 5 stamens joined together at the base into a light-green ring (glandular on the outside) and a green ovary with single style.

Fruits: Fruit a round to oval capsule.
