Gaylussacia ursina (M.A. Curtis) Torrey & A. Gray ex A. Gray. Common name: Bear Huckleberry, Mountain Huckleberry. Phenology: May-Jun; Jul-Sep. Habitat: Mesic to xeric forests, frequently dominant; common. Distribution: A narrow Southern Appalachian endemic: sw. NC (southwest of the Asheville Basin), nw. SC, ne. GA, and se. TN; disjunct at Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, Bell County, KY. On mountain slopes and summits in that area it is often the dominant shrub, forming large clonal patches.
