Vaccinium erythrocarpum Michaux. Common name: Bearberry, Highbush Cranberry, Mountain Cranberry. Phenology: Late May-Jul; Aug-Sep. Habitat: Rocky ridges, shrub or grassy balds, bogs, spruce-fir forests, usually at high elevations. Distribution: A Southern and Central Appalachian endemic, V. erythrocarpum ranges from WV through VA to w. NC, e. and ec. TN, and ne. GA.

Taxonomy Comments: The only other member of Section Oxycoccoides is V. japonicum Miguel of montane Japan, so similar as to be sometimes regarded as only a subspecies or variety of our species.
