Habitat: Wet pine savannas, bogs, marshes, pondcypress savannas, ditches adjacent to these natural habitats. Distribution: FL Panhandle and sw. GA west to e. LA; se. NC (where only a few populations remain); n. DE (at least formerly) and s. NJ; disjunct in NS.

Intro: Erect perennial of wet savannas, bogs, marshes and ditches adjacent to these natural habitats.

Stems: Stems branched above in inflorescence, and woolly above.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, erect, sessile-clasping, linear, 3-12 in. long (decreasing upward), mostly smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in a woolly-hairy, open, multi-branched terminal cluster; yellow; about 1/3 in. wide; consisting of 6 reflexed, lance-shaped tepals that are brownish-maroon on the inside and bear a yellow fringed crest, 6 erect-spreading stamens and a single ovary with long style.

Fruits: Fruit an oval capsule.
