Horticultural Information
Intro: Erect to spreading perennial found in pine savannas, bogs, seeps and fens.
Stems: Stems strongly 4-angled and alternately branched; there may be several stems from a somewhat woody base.
Leaves: Leaves in a basal rosette and opposite (sessile) on stem; basal leaves oblong-oval and stem leaves linear and reduced upward.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in terminal panicles, dark pink (occasionally white), nearly 1½ in. wide, the petals connected at the base by a red-rimmed, yellow-green star; linear, needle-like sepals are about as long as petals.
Fruits: Fruit an ellipsoid capsule.
