Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial of dry upland forests and rocky woodlands, forest borders and clearings, shale barrens.

Stems: Stems 4-angled, loosely branched above, covered in dense, curly hairs.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, petiolate, elliptic to narrowly oval, toothed, uppermost leaves whitish with dense, close-pressed hairs on upper surface; with a pungent minty scent when crushed.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers densely packed, along with tiny hairy bracts, in domed terminal and upper axillary clusters that sit on white-furry leaflike bracts; white to pale lavender, less than 1/4 in. long, tubular with 5 lobes, the 3 lower ones spotted with purple; the tubular calyx has 5 narrowly triangular lobes
