Scutellaria serrata H.C. Andrews. Common name: Showy Skullcap, Serrate Skullcap. Phenology: Mid May-late Jun. Habitat: Rich forests. Distribution: S. NY, s. OH, and KY south to GA and AL.

Horticultural Information

Intro: Erect, clumped perennial of rich, moist upland forests and well-drained alluvial forests.

Stems: Stems 1-several, 4-angled, simple, smooth or sparsely hairy above.

Leaves: Leaves opposite but crowded toward top of stem, where they may appear whorled; petiolate; oval to roughly diamond-shaped; 1 1/2-4 in. long; coarsely toothed and with a few hairs.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers erect-ascending in a 2- to 6-in.-long terminal raceme; blue-violet; about 1 in. long; bilaterally symmetric; tubular, opening to 2 lips, the upper one hood-like with curled-back side margins, and the spreading lower lip larger, broader and notched. The calyx tube is 2-lobed, with a distinctive cap-like projection on the upper lobe.

Fruits: Fruit a capsule containing 2-4 nutlets.
