Intro: Erect perennial of moist forests in coves and on mountain slopes, mountain pastures and forest edges.

Stems: Stems 4-angled, unbranched, the angles with stiff, downcurved hairs.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, petiolate, oval to elliptic, 2 1/2-6 in. long, coarsely toothed and sometimes purplish on the margins, smooth to slightly hairy.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in whorls on terminal spikes; pink with purple streaking; 1/3-1/2 in. long; bilaterally symmetric; tubular, opening to 2 lips, the upper one erect and concave, the lower spreading downward and 3-lobed. The finely hairy calyx tube has 5 triangular lobes, about 1/2 the length of the tube, with sharp, needle-like tips and may be red-tinged.
