Buchnera floridana Gandoger. Common name: Savanna Bluehearts, Florida Bluehearts. Phenology: Apr-Oct; May-Nov. Habitat: Pine savannas, pine flatwoods, seepage bogs, calcareous prairies (Black Best of MS and AL), sandy roadsides. Distribution: Se. NC south to s. FL, west to TX; West Indies; scattered localities in s. Mexico and Central America.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Previous attributions of B. longifolia Kunth (including B. elongata Small) to southeastern states (notably FL, AL, GA, and MS) are based on misapplication of that name to an entity that is under study and likely to be named as a Florida peninsular endemic species.

Intro: Erect perennial of pine savannas, flatwoods, seepage bogs and sandy roadsides.

Stems: Stems unbranched and rough-hairy below, smoother above.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, oblong-oval to lance-shaped (lower leaves) or linear (upper leaves), to nearly 3 in. long, prominently 3-veined, with a few blunt teeth, rough-hairy.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in a loose terminal spike, pink to purplish-pink, about ½ in. long, tubular and opening to 5 spreading, slightly unequal lobes; the tubular calyx and corolla tube are covered with short white hairs.

Fruits:

Comments: Semi-parasitic on roots of several grasses and woody plants, and reliant on regular fire. The very similar Buchnera americana is generally a larger, more robust plant and is mostly found on mafic or calcareous sites.
