Crataegus aemula Beadle. Rome Hawthorn. Phen: Apr; Sep. Hab: Upland hardwood and pine-hardwood forests over sandstone, calcareous rock or circumneutral clay soils, uncommon but sometimes locally abundant. Dist: Nw. GA and ne. AL principally, disjunct in McCormick Co, SC.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: Presumed related to C. iracunda Beadle, but foliage of C. aemula differs in having frequent rounded bases, yellow-green coloration; fruits red, 12-18 mm diameter. C. aemula has been shown to be triploid, likely apomictic, producing a high percentage of fertile seed with little seedling variation. The possibility of its being of hybrid origin between C. iracunda Beadle and C. collina Chapman has been suggested.
