Intro: Erect annual/perennial of roadsides, old fields, clearings and other disturbed areas. Native of S. America.
Stems: Stems solitary or several from the base, sharply 4-angled and grooved, rough-hairy on the angles.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, sessile or short-petiolate, elliptic, 1 1/2-4 in. long, sharply toothed, with bristy veins beneath.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in compact, cylindric spikes to 2 in. long, arranged in a wide-branching, terminal cluster; each flower pink to bluish-purple, tiny, with a hairy tube opening to 5 ascending, minute lobes. The slightly shorter calyx is also hairy.
