Verbena carnea Medikus. Common name: Carolina Vervain. Phenology: Apr-Jul. Habitat: Sandy woodlands, longleaf pine sandhills. Distribution: E. NC (se. VA?) south to c. peninsular FL, west to e. TX.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: Verbena carnea is sometimes placed in a monotypic genus, Stylodon Rafinesque, but apparently evolved from within Verbena. See discussion in Nesom (2010b, 2010e).

Synonymy : = F, Fl6, K4, RAB, (basionym); = Stylodon carneum — WH3, orthographic variant; = Stylodon carneus (Medik.) Moldenke — Tx; = Stylodon carolinensis (Walter) Small — S; = Verbena caroliniana Michx.
