Horticultural Information

NCBG trait

Intro: Erect annual of floodplain forests and marshes.

Stems: Stems slender, few- to bushy-branched, commonly red, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, long petiolate, 2-4 3/4 in. long, pinnately divided into 3-5 lance-shaped segments with long tapering tips (upper leaves may be undivided) and sharply toothed margins, mostly smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) on short to long stalks, 1/8-3/8 in. wide, rayless, with deep yellow to orange, tubular disk florets; 2 series of bracts, the inner light or yellowish-green and the outer leaf-like and green, surround the bell-shaped base of each head.

Fruits: Fruit a hairy achene bearing 2 very short, barbed awns (or awnless).
