*Centaurea jacea Linnaeus. Common name: Brown Knapweed. Phenology: Jun-Sep. Habitat: Roadsides, disturbed areas. Distribution: Native of Europe. This species is increasing rapidly in the VA Ridge and Valley. Reported for Alleghany County, NC (Poindexter, Weakley, & Denslow 2011).
