Taxonomy Comments: Eupatorium purpureum var. amoenum is smaller, more slender, with narrower leaves which are nearly glabrous below; it is probably only a form and is so treated here.

Intro: Large, erect perennial of upland, usually mesic forests.
Stems: Stems solid (hollow at the base), unbranched, purple at the nodes and smooth.
Leaves: Leaves in whorls of 3-5, lance-shaped and tapered to a winged petiole, to 12 in. long, sharply toothed and may be slightly hairy or gland-dotted beneath.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Composite flowers in small clusters within a large, showy, domed terminal cluster; heads about 1/3 in. long and consisting of 4-7 white or pinkish-purple, tubular disk florets (no ray florets) with protruding styles; surrounding the base of the head are several series of narrow, overlapping bracts.
